howto submit your website to search engines
Search Engine Submission - The Old fashioned Way!
While there are many "scripts" out there and services that offer to "submit" your website to the search engines, if you are like me you want to do it the manual old fashioned way. It took a good deal of digging to find how to submit a URL to these search engines, so I decided to write a howto on the topic. While there are probably thousands of search engines out there, I tried to find the big names and how to submit your site without needing to pay for advertising.
This article is built with the following assumptions:
- You have a website
- Your website is built, and content has been laid out and optomized to reach your target
- You are ready to receive traffic and critiques
Some websites allow for free "registration or submission of a url". Here are the Links I have found so far.
Google.com
All The Web
MSN
Yahoo!
DMOZ
Ask.com
- In order to request a url to be crawled you need to create a "sitemap", and submit it to ask in a specific format. Here is the specification for the sitemap.
- And the details how how to submit are as follows; http://submissions.ask.com/ping?sitemap=http%3A//www.the URL of your sitemap here.xml
- Check for details at: http://about.ask.com/en/docs/about/webmasters.shtml
Lycos
- Simply type the entire url of the page to be indexed into the search engine at Lycos. (As far as I know that is it.)
If you know of other search engines (agian i know there are many) and how to submit a url to be spidered / crawled or otherwise indexed please contact me.
